Confluence, the duo of Poet J.D. Scrimgeour and musician Philip Swanson, delivers compelling storytelling through narrative, long-form poetry, underscored by contemporary piano.
This evening features a 30-minute narrative poem, "The Baby," written by Scrimgeour and scored by Swanson. "The Baby" explores a multi-generational family secret beginning at the turn of the 20th century in a Greek mountain village, where a woman becomes pregnant while her husband is away; secrets follow the family to America, and mystery and questions are carried through generations.
The evening also includes award-winning Salem State actor James Wechsler performing Scrimgeour's dramatic monologue, "Territory," about a young gay man abandoned by his family. As in "The Baby," the story explores the repercussions of society's prejudices on families and individuals.
