Salem Theatre Company is delighted to open the Steven Dietz comedy PRIVATE EYES later this month. It will run April 21 through May 7 on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30pm and Sundays at 3pm. Previews are Thursday, April 21 and Friday, April 22 with Press Night also taking place on Friday, April 22. All shows are held at the theatre’s new space at Shetland Park at 35 Congress Street on the 3rd floor with readily available parking in the lot.
Labeled as a “comedy of suspicion” by playwright Steven Dietz this tale is woven together through multiple layers that, while keeping the audience laughing, also keeps people intrigued and questioning the truth of the matter. Inspired by Tom Stoppard’s The Real Thing, PRIVATE EYES takes us to a place where “Truth is air. And air is precious,” . . . the theatre. In the story of PRIVATE EYES actress Lisa is having an affair with director Adrian; Adrian’s running away from something; and with the help of his therapist Frank, Matthew’s trying to find the truth, isn’t he? And who is Cory?!? This complex and hilarious tale is not only a laughter-inducing, but occasionally a squirm-inducing comedic examination of love, fidelity, and truth wrapped up in a meta-meta-meta-theatrical world.
Directed by Rob Cope, who has recently worked on the STC stage in Medea, The Normal Heart and Crime and Punishment. He also served as the fight choreographer for Hamlet and The Rocky Horror Show. Cope says of his directorial debut PRIVATE EYES: “Humans are messy complicated creatures and when love, fidelity, and truth is in play things are even messier. Steven Dietz finds a middle-ground in Private Eyes where we squirm-laughingly as he invites us to examine ‘the truth’."
With direction by Rob Cope the cast includes Kate Devorak, Ian Helmick, Chris Kandra, Sam Lewis, Cailin McCormack, William Simmons and Ashley Skeffington with Lighting Design by Bryan Lussier and Stage Management by Anna Stenberg.
